From Anarchists and Marxists, to creating safe spaces and criticising no-platforming, the breadth of student politics is so wide you might not know which campaign to support. You may not even know why you should care about any of them. But don’t be put off, its not as scary as you might think. Plus, you’ll get just as much back from your involvement as the effort you put in. If you still need some convincing, here are four reasons you should wholeheartedly embrace student politics. Experience University might be for studying for an academic degree, but everyone knows its also three or four years of desperately getting involved in anything you can use to fill up your CV. Any activity can potentially improve your experience, but student politics really is the perfect extra-curricular for making your resume shine with impressiveness. There’s huge variety in the kind of experience you might manage to get. These include being on the committee for a politics society, and campaigning in the community for a cause or party. Student politics can also be a great gateway for work experience with a local political organisation. You may start off manning a stall at freshers fair, and end up helping out in an MPs office. And lets face it, work experience doesn’t get much more impressive than that. Employable skills So student politics is going to fill up that white space on your CV, but is it going to give you some real tangible skills for the workplace too? Of course it is. In fact, it’ll equip you with the skills that make you feel like a real adult, ready for the workplace, rather than an imposter. For example, you’ll likely put on events for other students, improving your organisational skills. Or you might want to start your own on-campus movement, meaning you’ll have practical experience in management. You could gain public speaking skills by taking part in a debate, or maybe you’ll create an amazing social media network that’ll give you valuable skills in the online world. Trust me, the opportunities to build skills are endless. Social life If you’re looking for friends, politics might not strike you as the place to head. However, it can really be a fantastic place to socialise. Groups within student politics can especially be tight-knit, so you might make some of your best friends through them. Like any society, spending lots of time working together over something you’re all passionate about can lead to fast friends. Plus, there’s a hot secret too; everyone thinks it’s the sports societies that have the best socials. Get involved with student politics and you’ll see who really parties the hardest. Broaden your horizons Involvement in student politics is great for getting a job and making like-minded friends, but it’s also a lot more than that. For many of us, university is the first place where we can get hands-on with politics, no matter our point of view. This opportunity for action and engagement is something to be cherished. No company can thrive and survive if it cant adapt and innovate and yet theres an almost universal cry going up today that change is tough and takes too much time and energy! Youll have upper management on one side pushing for innovation, employees on the other side clinging to the old ways and middle managers caught (where else?) in the middle trying to actually get stuff done. Sound familiar? My work with organizations all over the world has shown me that there is one vital factor that is being overlooked practically everywhere. One factor that can not only help companies change more rapidly and effectively but which contributes massively to the bottom line. That factor is happiness at work. Here are the top three reasons why happy companies change more effectively and painlessly. 1: Happy people get more ideas In times of change, companies cannot rely on the old ways of doing business and thus need new ideas. Preferably lots of them. And a fascinating study by Teresa Amabile of Harvard Business School shows that creativity is positively associated with joy and love and negatively associated with anger, fear, and anxiety. In other words, happy employees generate more ideas. 2: Happy people buy into new ideas. Its not enough to generate lots of ideas, you also need people to believe enough in them to actually want to implement them. Many managers work from a belief that change comes from dissatisfaction, pain and unhappiness, but psychological research proves them wrong. It turns out that what a business needs is optimists. Optimistic employees believe that change projects will pay off and are thus much more likely to commit. Unhappy, pessimistic employees only see all the ways a project can fail and often only go along on the surface ? offering compliance rather than commitment. 3: Happy people implement new ideas. And finally, once you have the ideas and people buy into them, you need to have the motivation to actually do something about it. And once again research shows that happy, satisfied employees are much more motivated. In fact, while managers must constantly work help dissatisfied employees find their motivation, happy employees motivate themselves. If you like the company you work for, you want the company to succeed if you hate your workplace, you dont give a damn. In short, happy companies change willingly and effectively, while their unhappy competitors cling to business as usual and throw up massive resistance to all things new and uncertain. And it doesnt stop there. Additional research shows that happy workplaces are more productive, have happier customers and (most importantly) make more money! Unhappy workplaces on the other hand waste huge sums on high absenteeism and employee turnover rates. One Danish company reduced their absenteeism from around 20% to less than 1% and their annual employee turnover from 25% to almost nothing ? simply by becoming a happy workplace. Its incredibly easy (but potentially depressing) to calculate how much money similar improvements could save your company every single month. In fact, studies indicate that happiness at work is the most important success factor for businesses today. Dont just take my word for it. Richard Branson of Virgin says that ?More than anything, fun is the secret behind Virgins success? and Apple CEO Steve Jobs says that ?The only way to do great work is to love what you do.? Many other hugely successful companies like Google, Disney Southwest Airlines and SAS Institute also focus relentlessly on employee happiness ? because it helps them change and grow and make more money. And the good news is that happiness at work aint rocket science. Any company, big or small, public or private, can do it, provided it is willing to engage both managers and employees in efforts to create a happy workplace, where people actually enjoy themselves and look forward to coming, rather than one where they show up reluctantly to do as little as they can get away with. LinkedIn is in a unique position to find out, so after analyzing over 330 million LinkedIn member profiles, they came up with The 25 Hottest Professional Skills of 2014. Of that 25, the top 5 are: Statistical Analysis and Data Mining Middleware and Integration Software Storage Systems and Management Network and Information Security SEO/SEM Marketing What This Means For 2015 These were the top 5 skills that employers and recruiters were looking for last year. These are the skills that got people hired. Does that mean you should drop your current career plans and get a degree in statistical analysis? Not necessarily but it does mean that technological understanding is something that cannot be ignored. Any candidate that has the skills needed for a particular job PLUS the global perspective of how that job fits into the bigger picture is a lot more prepared to compete. If your resume doesnt mention the technology you know how to utilize, its time to update your resume. In this increasingly interconnected world, we need professionals who can integrate the work they do with the global presence of the company that employs them. Each one of the top skills looked for attest to the fact that business is supported by technology and the IT department isnt just tech support. At the very least, taking the time to see what these areas consist of and how they are used in your industry prepares you to be someone who can see how their part fits into the mission of the company and gives you insight on the challenges of management and leadership. If you are interested in executive responsibilities, executive perspective sees how it all fits together. If I were to make any predictions for 2015, it would be that most of the skills on 2014s list will still be important. They may change positions, but like technology, they arent going away.
